Girish will perhaps never walk through a subway again. The 28-year old cleaner at Bangalore Press Club learnt the lesson of his life on Saturday morning, for misbehaving with girls from Maharani's College.
The girls, their relatives and friends beat up Girish black and blue and handed him over the Vidhana Soudha police. But they left him there without lodging a complaint. Later, Vidhana Soudha police shifted Girish to Ulsoorgate police, who booked a case against him.
But by evening, Girish was out as the police released him. The section that seeks to punish men who indulge in eve-teasing — Sec 509 of the IPC — is a non-cognizable offence.
It was Girish's morning routine. He would arrive at the underpass near Maharani's College every day and wait at the bend where he could not be noticed by the girls. If the girls walked by in a group, he would remain silent. If a lone girl entered, he would start making obscene gestures.
This went on for a few days, when some girls, including Divya, Rohini and others, decided to teach him a lesson. While Divya took up the issue with her brother Darshan, the other girls decided to approach some boys studying in a college nearby.
Luck ran out for Girish on Saturday. While Darshan and a few others entered the tunnel from one direction, the others waited at the other end to ensure he did not escape. When they asked Girish what he was doing in the tunnel, initially he resisted. When they began showering blows on him, he admitted to misbehaving with girls. The girls did not miss the chance either — they unleashed their anger and thrashed him till he apologized.
Later, they dragged him to Vidhana Soudha police station who handed him over to Ulsoorgate police. He was booked under Sec 509 of IPC and later released.
