CHENNAI: 2jan2010
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tomorrow at Raj Bhavan after the PM’s arrival in the evening. This would be the DMK chief’s first meeting with the Prime Minister after the developments over the 2G spectrum scam and the CBI raid on the residence of A Raja. The CM is likely to explain the reasons behind the State Government’s inability to get the environment ministry’s clearance for Adyar Eco Park, which was scheduled to be inaugurated by the PM on January 3. He is also likely to submit a memorandum on the financial assistance to cope with the rain damage.Karunanidhi will be using this opportunity to reaffirm and strengthen Congress-DMK ties. Significantly, a day before the PM’s arrival, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram called on the CM at his Gopalapuram residence and held discussions with him. However, Chidambaram said he met Karunanidhi to convey new year greetings. This comes after the CM on Saturday inaugurated the distribution of gift hampers and free dhoti and saris for Pongal, and reiterated that there was economic sense in freebies, and told the beneficiaries that the DMK regime must remain in power if freebie schemes were to remain.Referring to criticism in a section of the media that ridiculed giving freebies, he said that those people were actually mocking the Dravidian movement. “As long as the Dravidian movement continues and till such time as there are poor people, we will continue to give freebies to them,” he said.Meanwhile, addressing mammoth crowds that thronged AIADMK demonstrations across the state, MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Saturday said the DMK would be defeated in the forthcoming assembly elections, as the 2G spectrum scam and other issues like Sri Lankan Tamils sufferings would work against it. The new year would prove to be a turning point.
